This is an insult. It started off with people just wearing regular real rosaries. Now companies are making rosaries that don’t even have the correct number of beads. These are prayer tools. Not meant for tools to wear around their necks.
This is not directed at any person.
Buddhist prayer beads, Native American head dresses, feathers and jewelry, Hindu Bindi’s, Rastafari & African cultural items as a style and all other kinds of religious “tools” and symbols are commercialised - it’s not just Christian.
I wear a small komboskini and I do not pray with it.
If your “tool” is worn for the purpose of a ‘tool’ then it really shouldn’t be seen by anybody else, should it, how would that be fulfilling it’s purpose. I’d imagine that to avoid the appearance of a holier-than-thou attitude, keep those things to yourselves and pray in secret, there’s no reason to wear prayer ropes or rosaries in public, keep it in your pocket or under your clothing if you need to keep it with you - and go somewhere private to pray. Then you will keep the “sacredness” of the tool you are using without being a part of the fashion trend (whether you want to or not, if you wear it visibly, you’re perpetuating the trend)
If you feel that it is too commercialised (and insulting) then refrain from wearing them yourself… “but I’m actually using it as a prayer tool” is not a good enough reason, in my opinion.
Don’t worry about what somebody else is doing with a Chotki or a rosary or who is selling them, you worry about what you are doing - whether you are using it correctly or if you are wearing it for others to notice how prayerful and spiritual you are.
Wear it because you like it, if you want, I don’t see what the problem is with that. As a symbol, it can (help) connect you to a grander, overarching narrative or culture. But don’t wear it because you think it’s a spiritual prayer tool and you want everyone to see how godly you must be that you need to have your rosary or prayer rope with you at all times, easily accessibly at all times..
